Accessible Rail Travel: Iarnród Éireann’s Inclusive Journey

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Hey there, fellow Yanks! If you’re dreaming of exploring the Emerald Isle by train, I’ve got some exciting news. Iarnród Éireann, Ireland’s rail network, is stepping up its game to make accessible rail travel a reality for everyone. So, whether you’re rolling through Dublin or venturing further afield, let’s dive into how they’re making train journeys more inclusive—because travel should be a joy for all!

All Aboard for Inclusive Train Journeys

Iarnród Éireann is on a mission to ensure accessible rail travel for every passenger. They’re working hard to make stations and services welcoming for all, no matter your needs. Plus, they’ve teamed up with the Elephant in the Room campaign to promote mental health awareness. This partnership helps reduce stigma in public spaces like train stations. So, you can travel with confidence, knowing your physical and mental well-being is a priority.

Station Upgrades for Barrier-Free Rail

Good news! Iarnród Éireann is making big strides in station accessibility. For example, at Rathmore Station, construction kicked off in June 2024 and will wrap up by June 2025. Meanwhile, Maynooth Station is getting a new footbridge with lifts, set to finish by October 2025. Similarly, Athy Station will see upgrades completed by September 2025. At Rathdrum Station, a new lift on Platform 2 will be ready by September 2025, with work starting in March.

But that’s not all! More upgrades are in the works for stations like Boyle, Claremorris, Dromod, Longford, Rushbrooke, and Wicklow. These improvements mean barrier-free rail travel is coming to more corners of Ireland. If you’re planning a trip, check out our Favorite Destinations in Ireland page for ideas on where to go next.

A New Digital Solution for Disability-Friendly Travel

In 2024, Iarnród Éireann handled 52,000 assistance requests. To make this process smoother, they’re launching a new digital solution in 2025. Soon, you’ll be able to book assistance right from your smartphone or online. Here’s what you can expect:

  • On-demand bookings for quick help.
  • Immediate acknowledgment of your request.
  • Regular updates on your request status.

The procurement process for this system starts in April 2025. This upgrade will make disability-friendly travel even easier, so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

Sensory Packs for a Comfier Ride

Traveling with sensory needs? Iarnród Éireann has you covered. They’ve handed out over 5,000 Sensory Packs to customers, and the feedback has been amazing. These packs help make train journeys more comfortable for those with additional needs. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference for inclusive train journeys.

Training Staff to Support You Better

Iarnród Éireann is also investing in staff training to enhance accessible rail travel. In December, Epilepsy Ireland provided training to DART frontline staff at Pearse Station. More briefings will roll out across the network in 2025. This equips staff with the knowledge to assist customers with epilepsy, ensuring a safer and more supportive experience for all.
